Chadwick back in the big time as City lands the QM M Cup

La City Blanche swoops under Matt Chadwick
La City Blanche swoops under Matt Chadwick

Matt Chadwick, David Hayes and Zac Purton stole the show at Sha Tin on Sunday on a day when an exciting young sprinter made a striking impression.

Chadwick had gone the better part of three years since his last major success but LA CITY BLANCHE put things right when getting the better of a battle with stablemate Five G Patch in the G3 Queen Mother Memorial Cup.

Tony Cruz is aiming the first two at the G1 Champions & Chater Cup but there will be a dangerous visitor in town on May 26th as Charlie Appleby has confirmed that REBEL’S ROMANCE will head to Hong Kong in a bid to follow up his Sheema Classic success.

Zac Purton continued his march towards another jockeys’ championship with a Sunday four timer that sealed his eighth consecutive century.

David Hayes continued his fine form with a double that pushed him through the 600-winner barrier in Hong Kong.

And the Aussie pair were beaming in the winner’s enclosure after the upwardly mobile KA YING RISING bolted up on his Class 2 debut, powering clear and clocking the fastest closer of the day (22.27s) with minimal encouragement from the saddle.

“That gave me a real thrill,” said Hayes, before adding that he hopes the G3 Sha Tin Vase on June 2nd will provide the next step on a road he hopes will lead to December’s Hong Kong Sprint.

Sapphire looks the jewel in the Valley crown

And so to a nine-race card at Happy Valley on Wednesday and a golden chance for SEA SAPPHIRE to shine in the Sports Club Diamond Jubilee Challenge Cup at 1.40.

The more I look at this Class 4 dash, the more I think Pierre Ng’s gelding has a great chance of notching his second HK success.

The first came at Sha Tin in March, where he showed bright speed throughout, and his latest run there is better than it looks as he went too hard through the middle section and paid the price late in a race that’s working out nicely.

Returning to the Valley looks a plus for Sea Sapphire, especially as he’s drawn 3 in a race featuring plenty who are hard to fancy.

Add in the fact that an easy lead looks on the cards and this lad will be tough to beat provided Alexis Badel delays his kick for home until early in the straight.

Speedy Sports looks a Legend in the making

WIN SPEED, ZOOM BOOM and SPORTS LEGEND don’t have quite as much to recommend them as Sea Sapphire but all three have solid chances.

Purton provided a classic example of how to offset a high draw when Sports Legend notched a second Valley success last month.

The Aussie partners another hat-trick seeker in Super Joy N Fun in the finale (3.50) but Sports Legend gets on very well with Angus Chung and Danny Shum’s gelding gets the vote in a race where the battle for the early lead will be very important.

A vote for Win Speed in the 12.10 is based more on potential than proven form but Mark Newnham’s gelding showed promise on his debut and the way he trialled in blinkers recently hints that there could be a fair bit of improvement to come.

Lastly, Zoom Boom looks the one to watch in the 2.45. Douglas Whyte’s gelding took a while to click in HK but he was impressive in forging clear of Red Hare King and Giddy Up recently and could still be fairly treated despite a 7lb hike.

Wednesday’s Valley Views

12.10: Win Speed (EW)

1.40: Sea Sapphire (Nap)

2.45: Zoom Boom

3.50: Sports Legend
