The R&A have denied reports suggesting the decision to cancel this year's Open Championship has already been made.
Golf Digest revealed that sources had told them an announcement on cancellation - rather than postponement - was imminent, but on Thursday lunchtime the R&A insisted that various potential outcomes remain under consideration.
"We are continuing to work through our options for The Open this year, including postponement," said Martin Slumbers, chief executive of the R&A.
"Due to a range of external factors, that process is taking some time to resolve.
"We are well aware of the importance of being able to give clear guidance to fans, players and everyone involved and are working to resolve this as soon as we can.
"We will give a further update as soon as we are in a position to do so and thank everyone for their support and understanding in this challenging situation."
The Open is due to take place at Royal St George's in Kent from July 16-19, with next year's edition - the 150th should all go ahead as planned - returning to the Old Course at St Andrews.
Organisers had hoped to maintain the schedule as it stands so that anniversary celebrations can take place in Scotland. That may now depend on a postponement, rather than outright cancellation, of this year's renewal.
