Aston Villa the early favourites to sign Brentford striker Ollie Watkins

Aston Villa are the favourites to secure the signature of Brentford striker Ollie Watkins in the summer transfer window.

Sky Bet have the Midlands club, led by former Bees boss Dean Smith, at 3/1 to sign the 24-year-old, while Crystal Palace are at 4/1 and Championship title winners Leeds at 5/1.

Watkins' Brentford failed to secure promotion to the top-flight after they were beaten by Fulham in the Sky Bet Championship play-off final. That has led to speculation regarding the futures of Watkins and his fellow forward Said Benrahma.

Reports emerged on Wednesday morning that an £18million release clause in Watkins' contract has now become active due to Brentford missing out on promotion - although it's unclear how accurate that is with some outlets claiming it isn't the case.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank was unsure whether or not he can keep his best players following their defeat at Wembley on Tuesday.

"I must say it is not my biggest concern right now," Frank told Sporting Life.

"The reason why I am most down at this moment of time is for mainly for the fans, for (owner) Matthew Benham and for all the people who have been at this club for many, many years and they deserve so much to be in the Premier League.

"I also care and believe so much in this group of players and I am very disappointed we won’t have the opportunity to attack the Premier League.

"Nobody knows what will happen tomorrow, I just know one thing and we will have a very, very strong side going into the Championship for next season."

In 46 regular season games, Watkins netted 25 goals and finished one shy of Golden Boot winner Aleksandar Mitrovic - who won promotion with Fulham.

Watkins did match Mitrovic's total tally though with his strike against Swansea in the second leg of their semi-final tie.

Watkins, who moved to Brentford from Exeter in July 2017, played on either wing before cementing the striker role after Neal Maupay's departure to Brighton last summer. In 143 games for the West London club, Watkins has scored 49 and assisted a further 17.

Sky Sports report that Brentford want in excess of £50million for Benrahma and Watkins during this summer's transfer window if they are to depart.
