Francesca Schiavone remains on course for French Open 2018 main draw

Former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone remains on course for the main draw of this year's tournament but Eugenie Bouchard's hopes were ended by injury in qualifying.

Experienced Italian Schiavone, who won the title in 2010, overcame Canadian Carol Zhao 6-4 3-6 6-3, while 2014 Wimbledon finalist Bouchard retired from her match against Dalila Jakuopovic of Slovenia trailing 6-0 2-1.

Britain's Gabriella Taylor also booked her place in the second round, beating China's Lu Jing-Jing 7-5 6-0, but compatriot Katie Boulter lost 7-6 (7/5) 7-5 to Colombian Mariana Duque-Marino.

In the men's event, British number five Jay Clarke was also beaten losing in straight sets to Bernard Tomic.

Australian Tomic, who is looking to qualify for the tournament for the eighth successive year, took little over an hour to complete a 6-3 6-1 success over 19-year-old Clarke.
