World Open 2016: Ali Carter overcomes Joe Perry

Carter, who has faced testicular and lung cancer since winning the German Masters in 2013, was 9-5 ahead at one stage but saw a late comeback from Perry take it to an 18th frame.

He chose that moment to compile his first century of the final, making 127 to triumph in style.

Perry led at 3-2 early on only for Carter to reel off four frames in a row for a 6-3 end-of-session lead.

Carter had chances to put the match to bed but Perry began to find his form, taking the 13th frame with a break of 131 and taking advantage of a missed red in the 16th to post 106.

Another break of 93 made it 9-8 but Carter avoided a deciding frame by threading a precision red to the middle pocket to set him up for his best clearance of the day to bank the #90,000 winner's cheque.

"I'm delighted - there was so much riding on today, winning a ranking event as well as my top 16 place," said Carter. "I have been focused all week and to come out the winner is very special. It has been a great week for me.

"Today's match was very good. There were some big breaks and some scrappy frames as well. Joe might feel he lost the match in the first session, but then he played really well to come back at me. I knew I had to kill the match off in one visit so it was pleasing to do that in the end.

"I have been through a lot over the last couple of years so to get back into the top 16 is a huge achievement." Perry said: "I struggled all day, I didn't feel comfortable. I was battling against my cue action. I only started to play when the match was over and I made a game of it. But it's the worst I have played for a long time and I'm really disappointed in myself.

"I've had a good tournament and produced some good performances but I saved the worst until last. Ali played better than me and made less mistakes. I had more than enough chances."
