Horse racing tips: Timeform preview and selections for evening action

Check out the Timeform view on the evening action from Windsor and Wolverhampton on Monday.

AMIRAT ALWARD - 5.25 Windsor

The opening race on Windsor’s card, a five-furlong maiden for two-year-olds, looks a good opportunity for Richard Hughes’s Amirat Alward to get off the mark after a very promising debut at Lingfield a fortnight ago. She was the only newcomer in the field in the novice at Lingfield and her inexperience was plain to see, ultimately costing her what would otherwise have been a winning debut.

Amirat Alward was very slowly away, leaving her in rear in a race run at no more than a fair pace, but after making good headway on the inner over a furlong out she took second in the final 50 yards, finishing with running left. She was beaten a length and a quarter at the line behind Red Showgirl who enjoyed a better position throughout. That was a really eye-catching debut, however, from the daughter of Acclamation, who’s out of a half-sister to the Lowther winner Queen Kindly, and with the benefit of that experience behind her Amirat Alward looks sure to progress and go one better here.

THE WATERMAN - 7.05 Wolverhampton

Wolverhampton’s seven-furlong handicap looks an interesting race, with the formerly smart Flaming Spear dropping into 0-80 company for the first time after a long losing run which has seen his mark tumble since his last victory in a listed race at the end of 2018. However, Flaming Spear is nine now, and the one who makes most is appeal is three-year-old The Waterman at the opposite end of the handicap.

The Waterman ran a career best for Tom Ward on his only previous visit to Wolverhampton which came last month when building on earlier promise to get off the mark in a handicap over six furlongs. The Waterman can probably be forgiven his two subsequent defeats which came in more competitive contests on turf at Newbury. The return to the tapeta surface at Wolverhampton should be in The Waterman’s favour, while the way he stayed on to lead close home for that neck win over Readman last month suggests stepping up a furlong should suit him too.
