Lion roars for Stoute

Sir Michael Stoute got off the mark for the meeting when Society Lion landed the Qatar Handicap - meaning a single player landed the £100,000 ITV7 jackpot.

The son of Invincible Spirit was keen through the contest but still mustered a smart turn of foot approaching the furlong marker to put the race to bed.

The 5/4 favourite was a length-and-a-half clear of Mister Snowdon (5/1) at the line with King Ragnar (5/1) third.

Double delight for Bentley

Mark Johnston won the Unibet Summer Handicap for a remarkable seventh time and Harry Bentley completed a quick final day double as Hochfeld (15/2) landed the 2020 renewal.

The six-year-old was without a win in the last three years but knuckled down well inside the distance to beat Shailen (14/1) by half-a-length.

The pair were clear of Indianapolis (8/1) in third.

"He was very, very game as all Mark's tend to be. He kept on pulling out more. I was always comfortable where I was in the race, they went a very good clip, so I sat off the pace and looked to pick up the pieces late which he's done," said the winning rider.

"Glorious Goodwood is a huge meeting and it means an awful lot to me having grown up near here. The more winners the merrier!"

Bentley and Treacherous motor to success

Bentley initiated his double when 7/1 chance Treacherous ran out a ready winner of the Unibet Stewards' Sprint Handicap.

Favourite backers would have been happy for much of the contest with the strong-traveling Rewaayat blazing a trail until folding inside the distance.

At that stage the Ed de Giles-trained winner was produced to hit the front and he ran on well to beat fellow fast-finisher Dream Today (22/1) by a length-and-three-quarters.

The Lamplighter (22/1) was third, narrowly ahead of the 3/1 market leader.

"It's been a fantastic week," the winning rider told ITV Racing. "This lad has done it very well. I was probably drawn on the wrong side and ended up getting there early enough as he tends to run around in front but he's done it well.

"Ed has campaigned him very well. He felt tip-top today, he went down to post really, really well and is a very consistent sort."

The winning trainer added: "Treacherous is improving all the time, it seems, but he is a big horse and has obviously taken time to mature. He has not been over-raced considering his age, but he would be relatively fragile - he spends most of his time swimming between races now he is fit. He just keeps pulling out more and more. He doesn't do a lot in front normally, so that probably helps us as we've scaled up, so we don't get clobbered too much each time.

"At some point, we will hit the handicap ceiling, and we'll probably pop him in a Listed race at some point. I think the ground today was perfect for him. His post-covid comeback run, when he was second, was on slower than ideal ground, and his run at Ascot last year was disappointing, but I put it down to ground.

"We had a small setback with him so he came back in a bit later - we wanted to do an all-weather campaign with him - and I just wanted to run him a couple or three times on the grass, because I thought he would be nearly as good, and it has now proven so.

"We were going to give him a break now, but if you can find races where the prize-money is reasonable. He will have a break at some point because he has been on the go for a long time, but I would much rather be running him on the grass than the all-weather in the winter. I know there are good prizes to be had, but it's probably more enjoyable."

Tudhope leaves it late on Rock

Danny Tudhope followed up his victory on Summerghand in the Stewards’ Cup with a last-gasp win on Titan Rock (9-1) in the British European Breeders Fund EBF Maiden Stakes.

John Quinn’s youngster pounced late to beat 66-1 outsider Raging Rascal by half a length with Longlai a close third.
