Saturday’s ITV coverage kicks off with the competitive Sir Peter O’Sullevan Memorial Handicap Chase and this could be fast and furious with a handful of prominent racers in here.

TOPOFTHECOTSWOLDS is likely to be one of them and the hope is he gets into a good rhythm on the front end under Sam Twiston-Davies as he looks handicapped to have a big say.

Rated 142 after his first stint over fences, he reverted to hurdles last season before being brought back chasing in the summer where he dropped to a mark in the low 130s after trying a variety of trips.

He’s best at this sort of intermediate distance, though, and shaped well after a four-month break at Wetherby over 2m3f last time, suggesting that he’s now weighted to win again when everything drops right for him.

"At 9/1 I think he's a super bet" | Best bets for Ladbrokes Trophy day at Newbury

COOPER’S CROSS - 1.30 Newcastle

Three ITV races at Newcastle begin with the four-runner Betfair Daily Rewards Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase and Valleres looks the likely favourite.

He ran well on his fencing debut at Newbury when third and is expected to improve now he steps up in trip to almost three miles.

However, the same can be said about COOPER’S CROSS as he recovered from finishing lame on his chasing debut at Sedgefield to get up and win at the same track next time out.

He benefitted from Baron De Midleton idling, but there’s no doubt he did well to get up over a trip likely to be short of his optimum and this point-to-point winner can improve at the distance at Newcastle.

GLORY AND FORTUNE - 1.50 Newbury

There are plenty of angles in the Get Your Ladbrokes £1 Free Bet Today Handicap Hurdle and the unexposed profiles of Lecale’s Article and Masters Legacy head the market.

That’s understandable and Paul Nicholls runs solid improver Calva D’Auge, who looks the most obvious on-paper pace angle in the race, and he shouldn’t be underestimated.

The one I’m drawn to is GLORY AND FORTUNE for Tom Lacey, a horse whose impressive Welsh Champion Hurdle win was franked by the runner-up, Dans Le Vent, last week.

He ran okay when sixth in a hot Greatwood after that and he’s interesting on this first crack at 2m4f, a distance that should suit him judging by his pedigree.

The ground was probably a bit lively for SPIRITOFTHEGAMES in the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham but he ran on quite nicely up the hill for ninth once it was all over.

Dropped 3lb for that run to 141, he’s now looking well-treated over fences and the forecast rain at Newcastle, which could measure up to 25mm according to some forecasts, is in his favour.

I also like him stepping back up to three miles over fences as he ran very well at Aintree in the spring under such circumstances, finishing a five-length third in a good race off a higher mark despite not jumping well.

A cleaner round in the north east could see him go very close and he’s too tempting to ignore off his new rating.

GOWEL ROAD - 2.25 Newbury

Soaring Glory looks a rapid improver for Jonjo O’Neill and he could win the Ladbrokes Committed To Safer Gambling Intermediate Hurdle on the bridle if things go to plan.

However, he’s done his winning in big-field handicaps and this four-runner affair might not play to his strengths so preference is for GOWEL ROAD.

He’s a progressive sort himself and he’s got a good record at Newbury having won twice over the course and distance as a novice.

More testing ground would be preferable for him over this trip – and he looks the sort who could have a say in the Betfair Hurdle back here in February – but he’s worth chancing on Saturday’s conditions under a likely aggressive ride.

POTTERMAN - 3.00 Newbury

The Irish look to hold a very strong hand in the Ladbrokes Trophy with Willie Mullins’ Ontheropes and Henry De Bromhead’s Eklat De Rire disputing favouritism.

Both have obvious chances, but Ontheropes’ Munster National win isn’t working out well – the beaten horses are 0 from 13 between themselves subsequently – and Eklat De Rire isn’t proven in the hustle and bustle of a big field.

Given both have been well found in the market it could be worth taking them on with something each-way and POTTERMAN looks the ideal candidate at 14/1 (you can get slightly bigger odds, but you get seven places at Sky Bet and Hills at 14s).

I like how Alan King’s horse coped with a furious charge at the first couple of fences in the Badger Beers and that was a storming prep run in second, as he came out the best horse at the weights by a long way despite being inconvenienced by track position.

He looks an improved horse this season - he jumps well, stays, and likes the better ground, while he’s 2lb well-in on the back of that Wincanton run.

A prep run is a major positive in this race – Bobs Worth was the last horse to win this fresh in 2012 and he won the Gold Cup that season – and Potterman looks like a horse who can improve from his first outing and have a big say at a nice price.

EPATANTE - 3.15 Newcastle

The rain looks set to turn conditions against Sceau Royal in the Betfair Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle.

He’s been in great form on the better ground but there’s more than enough in the forecast to turn attentions elsewhere and this could turn into an EPATANTE versus Monmiral shootout.

It will be fascinating to see how Paul Nicholls’ four-year-old gets on this season, but giving 7lb to Epatante first time up might be beyond him and Nicky Henderson’s mare can win her fourth Grade One.

This has turned into a nice opportunity for her to regain the winning thread and her strength in the market indicates that her preparation has gone smoothly.

ELUSIVE BELLE - 3.35 Newbury

A really tough puzzle to conclude the ITV action and there’s several you can give a chance to in the Watch Racing Free Online At Ladbrokes Handicap Chase.

Grey Diamond, Il Ridito and Éclair D’Ainay were all on the shortlist, but Nicky Henderson’s ELUSIVE BELLE looks to have a chance at a bigger price under Sam Waley-Cohen.

A strong gallop looks likely here and she can travel into things strongly, just as she did at this meeting last year when landing the two-mile novices’ handicap.

That proved she’s right at home on the track/trip/ground and off just a 5lb higher mark it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if the Seven Barrows mare went in again.
