Former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is joining the New England Patriots to fight for Tom Brady's old job at Gillette Stadium.
Former league MVP Newton has signed a one-year deal with the Pats after becoming a free agent following his release by Carolina at the end of the season.
Both the NFL and the player himself posted the news on social media, with the former No.1 overall draft pick now heading to New England and the chance to fill the giants shoes of Brady.
The Patriots parted ways with six-time Super Bowl champion Brady as he decided to seek a new challenge with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with Pats coach Bill Belichick expected to trust Brady's young back-up Jarrett Stidham with the keys to the team's offence.
However, the chance to pick-up the 2011 number one overall pick, who was named MVP when leading the Panthers to the 2016 Super Bowl, was just too good to turn down.
Injuries were a big part of his demise in Carolina, as he played in just two games last season when struggling for full fitness, and now the 31-year-old has the chance to challenge for the starting role at the most dominant team in the NFL.
It's an exciting prospect to see just what Belichick and the Patriots do with Newton, who was a supreme talent in the league at his best with his running ability from the quarterback position a trend-setter at the time.
Newton's a giant, imposing figure and with the tactical ability in New England he could offer them an entirely new look as an attacking unit. Brady is arguably the best QB to have ever played the game, but was also probably the slowest runner and Newton gives the team something massively different.
Not that Newton is guaranteed the starting spot though, with New England keen on Stidham and they'll want Newton to prove himself both physically and ability-wise in what should be a genuine QB competition.
Newton posted on Instagram: "I'm as excited as I don't know what right now!! All praise to God!! Dropping content tomorrow! I hope you're ready! Let's go Pats."
