Final round report
American Hudson Swafford overcame a near-catastrophe on the back nine to score a one-stroke win at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship PGA tournament in the Dominican Republic.
Two shots behind leader Adam Long heading into Sunday, Swafford surged to the front with a stellar front nine of five-under 31, featuring an eagle, three birdies and no bogeys.
After three more pars he led by four heading to 13th, but a double-bogey six on that hole, followed by a bogey at the 15th left him tied for the lead with compatriot Tyler McCumber and Canada’s Mackenzie Hughes.
But Swafford coolly hit to within 10 feet for a birdie on the par-three 17th, before a closing par secured the victory with a closing round of three-under 69.
McCumber held onto second with a strong 66, while Hughes’s 70 gave him third, a further shot away.
Scotland’s Martin Laird – the only Briton to make the cut – finished in a tie for 65th after a closing 75.
