Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus has revealed that Jadon Sancho will be staying at the club for at least another season.
Manchester United were heavily linked with a move for the England international and remain hopeful of completing a deal by the October 5 transfer deadline.
That optimism comes despite the fact they missed a deadline of August 10 set by the Bundesliga club for a deal to be completed. Dortmund have been clear that he would stay at the club if that date was not met.
And a move to Old Trafford now looks even more unlikely following Reus' interview with Sky Germany, where he stated that Sancho will remain a Dortmund player.
When asked if Sancho had made the right decision in staying with the club, Reus said: "For us players that was great news.
"We all were happy that he will be with us for one more year because he delivers assists and goals, so we get points."
Reus also believes that Sancho, who Dortmund value at £108million, has the potential to be a player who can go to the very top of the game.
"If he gets as big as (Lionel) Messi or Ronaldo, we will see," he continued. "He needs time, experience and it will be important how he manages the times when things don't go so well. But he has the confidence and the quality."
Reports emerged in previous weeks that United had managed to agree personal terms with Sancho but couldn't secure a deal with his current club - who are unwilling to move on their valuation.
Donny van de Beek remains Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's only senior signing in this transfer window after the midfielder signed on permanent terms from Ajax.
Despite Dortmund's reluctance, United are expected to return with another bid and Watford's Ismaïla Sarr has been reported as an alternative should they be unable to reach an agreement.
