Phil Thompson's best ever Liverpool players: Soccer Saturday pundit & Reds legend picks best Anfield side

Soccer Saturday pundit and Liverpool legend Phil Thompson picks his best ever Reds players in each position.

Goalkeeper - Ray Clemence

Ray Clemence, playing behind him for Liverpool and England, was just incredible. He may have been unemployed for 89 minutes, 30 seconds in a match, probably freezing cold in the process, but he would pull off the most incredible saves. It was his positional play - he was a sweeper keeper before people invented the name. He was always, for me and my defenders, our eyes and ears at most points, making sure we were alert and on our toes. He was the most incredible goalkeeper.

Defender - Alan Hansen

It is a toss-up between Alan Hansen and Virgil Van Dijk. There have been some wonderful centre-backs throughout the years, the likes of Sami Hyypia and Jamie Carragher too. If Virgil Van Dijk was to go and win a few more things he could out do Hansen I think. For the trophies he won and the years he played, Hansen was the next best defender that I have seen to Bobby Moore, and he was a Rolls Royce of a defender. Hansen was six foot two, great in the air, was unbelievably quick, and he could read the game brilliantly. A proper, proper player, so sorry Virgil!

Midfielder - Steven Gerrard

The midfielder has to be Steven Gerrard. Why not Graeme Souness? Why not players of that ilk? The likes of Souness and players before him played with a lot of great players in all positions. Gerrard did not have that luxury, and for 15 years or so, he carried the Liverpool side. He was a great captain, a great leader. He singlehandedly won games, and cups, for his side, which was unbelievable to see. He was such an inspirational player.

Forward - Kenny Dalglish

This is quite an easy one for me, but there are so many to go by. This is the greatest Liverpool player of all time. It is just an opinion, but after seeing what Kenny Dalglish could do, it was just phenomenal. What Luis Suarez did for three years, Kenny did for 15. He could bamboozle and mesmerise defenders and was a scorer of great goals - he had a wonderful appetite for the game. He was such a team player. Everything that he did, he would have to stand out. My biggest hero was Roger Hunt, you also have Ian Rush too. Other goalscorers like Fernando Torres and Suarez, Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler were all great players and scorers. Liverpool have been blessed with some incredible players.
