FA Cup fourth round highlights & review: Tammy Abraham hits hat-trick for Chelsea

Tammy Abraham's hat-trick put Chelsea through, while Leicester's second-half performance was too much for Brentford and Burnley comfortably beat Fulham.

Sunday's FA Cup results

Chelsea 3-1 Luton

Tammy Abraham struck a smart Stamford Bridge hat-trick as Chelsea drove past stubborn Luton with a 3-1 win and into the FA Cup fifth round.

England hitman Abraham took his Chelsea goal tally to 11 for the season, netting twice in seven first-half minutes before completing his treble late on.

Jordan Clark profited from the struggling Kepa Arrizabalaga’s latest error to claw one back for Championship side Luton, but the Blues ground their way to an important fourth-round win.

Timo Werner missed a late penalty in a frustrating end to his afternoon, but Chelsea will now travel to Barnsley in the fifth round.

This victory was crucial for under-pressure boss Frank Lampard, who will now set about trying to engineer a return to winning ways in the Premier League.

England midfielder Mount captained Chelsea for the first time, a fine reward for the 22-year-old’s relentless graft and quality.

A fine boost for Chelsea’s much-vaunted academy, Mount delivered precisely the exemplary leadership Lampard both required and so craved.

The 13-cap midfielder took to a deep-lying role in Lampard’s latest formation – and his partnership with Gilmour merits exploration in the Premier League.

Chelsea desperately need wins in home matches against Wolves and Burnley next week after five losses in eight league encounters.

And Lampard could do far worse than pair up young Scot Gilmour with his Mr Dependable Mount in the coming weeks.

Brentford 1-3 Leicester

Second-half goals from Cengiz Under, Youri Tielemans and James Maddison saw Leicester come from behind to knock out cup specialists Brentford 3-1.

The Championship Bees, who shocked four Premier League sides on their way to this season’s Carabao Cup semi-finals, were threatening to add the Foxes to their list of scalps when they led through Mads Bech Sorensen’s early goal.

But whatever City boss Brendan Rodgers said at half-time did the trick because just six minutes into the second half they were in front, before going on to comfortably book a home meeting with Brighton in the fifth round.

Leicester, without injured top scorer Jamie Vardy, made eight changes but England midfielder Maddison kept his place and was instrumental in their comeback.

The visitors threatened in the opening moments when Under charged to the byline and pulled the ball back for Ayoze Perez, whose first-time volley flew just wide.

But it was Brentford who went ahead with their first attack after Leicester failed to clear Vitaly Janelt’s corner.

Defender Sorensen was quickest to react to the loose ball and poked it past Foxes keeper Danny Ward from close range.

Leicester had offered little in the opening 45 minutes, but that changed just 48 seconds after the restart.

Maddison weaved through the Brentford rearguard to the edge of the area before teeing up Under, who powerfully fired home past Luke Daniels.

Then, in the 51st minute, Tielemans was tripped in the area by Fosu and the Belgium midfielder sent Daniels the wrong way with the spot-kick.

Maddison killed off the tie with 20 minutes remaining when he tapped in the rebound after Barnes’ shot was saved.

Everton 3-0 Sheffield Wednesday

Former Blade Dominic Calvert-Lewin was quickly back into the goalscoring groove after making his mark in Everton’s 3-0 FA Cup fourth-round win over Sheffield Wednesday.

The ex-Sheffield United trainee, who made a dozen appearances for the first team before moving to Goodison Park in 2016, scored his first goal in 50 days after returning from injury to help set up a fifth-round tie at home to either Wycombe or Tottenham.

Their performance was comfortable but not convincing against the Championship’s second-bottom team until two set-piece goals inside four second-half minutes from Richarlison and Yerry Mina.

However, there was never any real threat of an upset as Everton, in their 26th year without a trophy, edged closer to ending their long wait for silverware.

It owed much to the creative talents of James Rodriguez, who cruised through the game playing at his own pace but still dominated the ball and looked to be close to reaching the form which helped fire the Toffees to the top of the Premier League early in the season – even if both his assists came from corners.

Fulham 0-3 Burnley

Jay Rodriguez struck twice for Burnley as they progressed through to the FA Cup fifth round thanks to a dominant 3-0 win at Fulham.

The 31-year-old had not found the net since a 1-1 draw at Liverpool on July 11, but gave his side the lead with a well-worked header just after the half-hour mark.

Rodriguez then doubled the visitors’ advantage in the 71st minute, firing down the middle from the penalty spot.

With just under 10 minutes left on the clock, Rodriguez turned provider, controlling a loose ball in the Fulham penalty area with his shoulder into the path of Kevin Long who was able to tap home and secure his side’s place in the next round.

The snow had only been cleared from the pitch an hour before kick-off on Sunday, which left the surface wet and the grass slow.

Burnley broke the deadlock through Rodriguez, who glanced home a well-weighted Jack Cork cross from the right side.

Referee Andrew Madley immediately pointed to the spot in the 70th minute after a coming together between Michael Hector and Vydra, with the Fulham defender adjudged to have nudged the forward in the back.

Rodriguez made no mistake from the spot to double his side’s advantage.

Burnley then secured their progress in the competition through Long in the 81st minute.

A long ball forward was not dealt with by the Fulham defence and Rodak was unable to gather the ball, which fell to Long who slotted home for his first club goal since September 2018.

Manchester United 3-2 Liverpool

Supersub Bruno Fernandes’ fantastic free-kick secured Manchester United an impressive 3-2 FA Cup fourth-round victory against rivals Liverpool as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer oversaw his first triumph against Jurgen Klopp’s men.

A week on from a tense goalless Premier League draw at Anfield between the Premier League leaders and reigning champions, an empty Old Trafford hosted a far more entertaining encounter between these old foes.

Mohamed Salah’s fine opener was cancelled out by Mason Greenwood in an entertaining first half which was followed by a similar pulsating second period on Sunday.

Marcus Rashford coolly put United ahead only for Salah to level with his second of the match, setting up a grandstand finish in which star man Fernandes came off the bench to score a super free-kick winner.

A home clash against West Ham is the reward for the Red Devils, who Solskjaer led to victory against Liverpool at the fifth time of asking – 22 years to the day after scoring the winner against them at the same stage of the competition.

Defeat made this the fifth time in six seasons that the Reds had failed to progress beyond the fourth round of the FA Cup under Klopp, whose poor start to 2021 continued as they lost on enemy territory.
