Brentford seal victory and keep pressure on top two with late comeback

Brentford needed late goals from Said Benrahma and Ethan Pinnock to beat Charlton 2-1 and crank up the pressure on West Brom in the race for automatic promotion.

Lowly Charlton led through an early goal from Macauley Bonne, but Benrahma levelled from the penalty spot before Pinnock headed the winner five minutes from time.

It was by no means a vintage display but nonetheless Brentford have once again cut the gap to the second-placed Baggies, who play Derby on Wednesday evening, to just two points.

Arter strike keeps Fulham promotion push on track

Harry Arter: Fulham midfielder celebrates a stunning strike at Nottingham Forest

Harry Arter’s superb strike kept alive Fulham’s hopes of automatic promotion from the Championship as they won 1-0 against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

A game of few clear-cut chances was settled in first-half injury time by Arter’s left-foot effort from just outside the penalty area which flew into the top corner of the net.

It gave Fulham a third straight victory and moved them to within four points of second-placed West Brom, who host Derby on Wednesday.

A first defeat since the restart for Forest is likely to end their hopes of catching the top two and mean they have to settle for a play-off spot.

Cardiff loosen grip on Championship play-off place after defeat to Blackburn

Adam Armstrong’s 45-yard wonder goal dented Cardiff’s play-off hopes as Blackburn took the spoils with a thrilling 3-2 victory.

Tony Mowbray’s Rovers twice came from behind thanks to goals from Danny Graham and Dominic Samuel before Armstrong produced one of the goals of the Sky Bet Championship season.

Cardiff’s Will Vaulks had opened the scoring with another superb strike and Robert Glatzel put the Bluebirds back ahead after Graham’s equaliser but they had not banked on Armstrong’s effort.

The Welsh side still remain in sixth place going into Wednesday’s fixtures.

Halme rescues a point for Barnsley at fellow relegation battlers Luton

A late goal by Barnsley substitute Aapo Halme saw the Tykes salvage an important point at Luton in the battle of the Championship’s bottom two teams.

The draw leaves Luton at the foot of the table on 41 points, with Barnsley a single point better off – and now just three behind Hull in 21st.

The hosts took the lead in the 13th minute as a lovely move on Luton’s right saw James Bree find Hylton, who played in Elliot Lee. The attacker’s low shot hit the outside of the post where Luke Berry hammered the rebound into the top corner against his former club.

Barnsley pressed hard for a leveller, with Alex Mowatt’s free-kick hitting the wall, while Chaplin sliced a volley over from close range on his left foot and Woodrow’s effort was deflected behind by Sonny Bradley. The Tykes were struggling to replicate the heights of their first-half play as an attacking force, with Brown’s tame effort easy for Luton stopper Sluga to gather.

However, they found a second wind thanks to some inspired substitutions by boss Gerhard Struber, one leading to the leveller in the 84th minute, when Halme fired home with his first touch after a disputed corner was not cleared.

Mowatt’s long-range shot was gathered by Sluga as although both sides threw men forward in search of a winner at the death, they had to settle for a point which leaves basement club Luton one point behind Barnsley.

Huddersfield claim crucial draw at Reading

Huddersfield gained what could prove a vital point in their battle against Championship relegation with a 0-0 draw at Reading.

Neither side was able to make the breakthrough in a dour first half, with Huddersfield’s 18-goal striker Karlan Grant a peripheral figure.

The game did not improve much after the break, with Reading equally culpable, and Grant twice failed to make the most of good openings.
