Austrian Darts Open 2016: Taylor tames Smith in final

Phil Taylor claimed the Austrian Darts Open title with a 6-4 victory over Michael Smith in Sunday's final.

Taylor fired in seven 180s and broke Smith's throw three times in Vienna as he took full advantage of a shock defeat for Michael van Gerwen in the quarter-finals.

Taylor forged ahead by nailing double 10 for his first break but four in a row saw the score move on to 3-3.

Smith went out on 130 to move 4-3 ahead but 11- and 12-dart legs from Taylor saw him move within one of the title.

He clinched victory with a 32 checkout to win what was his first European Tour event in two years.

World number one Van Gerwen had earlier been sent crashing out by Kyle Anderson in the last eight. Anderson clinched a 6-4 win only to lose a final-leg thriller to Taylor in the semis.

On the other side of the draw, Smith had beaten Terry Jenkins 6-4 in the last four.
