Nathan Aspinall is favourite to win tonight's PDC Home Tour group. Check out the preview and tips from Chris Hammer, who flagged up winners for the past three nights.
Sky Bet odds to top group: Nathan Aspinall 8/11, Jose De Sousa 5/2, Jamie Hughes 4/1, Jesus Noguera 20/1
Nathan Aspinall may well be a fair favourite on his current standing in the usual format of the game, but there was nobody more impressive on their PDC Home Tour debuts than Jose de Sousa in the opening group stage.
The 46-year-old, who became the first Portuguese winner of a PDC event by thrashing Gerwyn Price 8-1 last September before picking up a second title a few weeks later against Glen Durrant, showed the rest of the world how to consistently reach sky high standards in your own house when recording averages of 110.5, 97.6 and 106.8 to top his group with a thumping legs difference of +14!
Sure, it helped a little that neither Robert Thornton (77.4), Keegan Brown (84.9) nor Reece Robinson (92.7) pushed him particularly hard but that should take anything away from his performances compared to everyone else.
To but his efforts into context, there were just 31 ton+ averages in 192 matches across those opening 32 groups, with Joe Cullen eclipsing de Sousa's night on his second bite of the cherry by recording three of those.
Aspinall didn't manage it in any of his three wins but perhaps he just wasn't pushed hard enough, and after plenty more weeks of home practice, there's no reason to think he won't up his game tonight.
That said, the value pick tonight is Jamie Hughes at a very eye-catching 4/1.
The Tipton star, who I backed at 11/4 to top a group with Krzysztof Ratajski in the previous round, enjoyed a dream debut season on the PDC circuit last year winning a European Tour title and climbing up the rankings quick enough to qualify for the World Matchplay.
After a disappointing World Championship, where he lost in the opening round, Yozza bounced back impressive by beating MVG in a deciding leg en route to a Players Championship quarter-final and after a few more solid runs, he then reached the same stage of the UK Open only to lose an agonising decider to Jonny Clayton after missing eight match darts.
He adapted to this tournament well by registering a trio of 5-2 victories and, like Aspinall, we can probably expect high performance levels from him and arguably lower ones from de Sousa!
The huge 20/1 outsider of the quartet is Jesus Noguera and while he upset odds of 6/1 last time out, his highest average across his three surprising victories was 84.9. He may just be out of his depth on this occasion.
