Coronavirus: Dillian Whyte v Alexander Povetkin postponed as Anthony Joshua v Kubrat Pulev faces rescheduling

Dillian Whyte's heavyweight clash with Alexander Povetkin has been postponed although with two other big fight dates in May but promoter Eddie Hearn has indicated that boxing could return behind closed doors.

The show at Manchester Arena on May 2, which also included Katie Taylor's world title fight against Amanda Serrano, is the latest event to be affected by the coronavirus pandemic while the Lee Selby v George Kambosos Jr card at the Motorpoint Arena Cardiff on May 9 and the Oleksandr Usyk v Derek Chisora bout at The O2 in London on May 23 are also to be rescheduled.

Anthony Joshua's clash with Kubrat Pulev could also be moved from June 20 to July 25.

Whyte’s Interim WBC world title clash with Povetkin has been rescheduled to Saturday July 4, while Selby’s IBF lightweight world title final eliminator against Kambosos Jr has been rescheduled to Saturday July 11. Tickets will be valid for these rescheduled dates or refunds will be available from your point of purchase.

A new date for Usyk’s blockbuster heavyweight showdown with Chisora is also being worked on, with tickets also remaining valid for the rescheduled date once announced.

A statement from Matchroom Boxing read: The health and safety of the boxers, staff, event contractors and fans involved with our events remains the top priority for Matchroom Boxing and we thank everyone for their understanding. We look forward to bringing world class boxing events back to these shores as soon as it is safe to do so."

Hearn has suggested boxing could stage a low-key return to the schedules if the current social distancing regulations begin to be eased by June.

Hearn told Talksport: "We will make an official announcement today (about the Whyte show) but basically yes (the show is off).

"The problem is nobody knows, but we all hope we can return to some kind of boxing in June.

"Whether that's behind closed doors at first, or whether that's back with small-hall shows then we hope we can get to the bigger shows before the end of June."

Hearn reiterated the prospect of moving Joshua's world heavyweight title defence against Pulev back to July 25.

The clash is still scheduled for June 20 at Tottenham's new stadium, but the escalating health crisis - and a potential extension of the Premier League season - has made discussing a new date difficult.

Hearn described the July 25 date as "more realistic", and added: "I know there's a bigger picture going on but everyone in sport right now needs to be working on a solution.

"It's going to be an horrifically messy time for sports and businesses when we do come out of the other side, because the world won't be the same again."
